A Win/Win Solution
This email was sent to the City Council in 2018.
A couple of years ago, someone proposed that the area set aside for the Doherty Drive Extension be used instead for a bike path or walking path. As far as I know, there was no follow-up to this.

One thing worth noting about this option is that it is very much a win/win choice. No one will get everything he/she wants, but everyone will benefit in some way. Preserving the trees enhances quality of life for all; the added green space helps reduce flooding risk for all; security and privacy are improved for those living adjacent to the route of the road; residents with small children will worry less about them walking to school next to heavy traffic; the funds that will be saved can be applied to the real needs of all; in a bona fide emergency, the path could provide a second exit from the Heritage Oaks area; everyone gets to bike or walk on the new path; and so on. Citizen inputs on the design could be solicited, which in itself might tend to generate positive feedback and support. In the end, West Melbourne will enhance its reputation as a desirable place to live and work, and its leaders will be seen as positive, forward-looking, and responsive to the real needs of the people. Everyone wins, including you!

The same cannot be said about the alternative. Constructing a road through a residential neighborhood is inherently a very win/lose act which may benefit some but will hurt many people in some way, some much more than others. This type of win/lose situation tends to tear the community apart, which can’t be good for any of us, winners or losers!

I suggest giving the bike/walking path option another look.

Thank you for your attention.
