Impact of US192 Changes
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is planning to reduce the lane widths and lower the speed limits on US192. This will probably increase the traffic on Henry Ave, induce more cut-through traffic on the Heritage Oaks Blvd/Doherty Drive Extension, and exacerbate the dangers at the Henry/Doherty intersection. The message below was sent to FDOT, asking them to re-evaluate their plan.

I have serious concerns about the interaction between this project and a road building project being planned by the City of West Melbourne.
The city intends to build a new road creating a shortcut between Minton Road and Henry Ave. The new road is likely to induce cut-through traffic (often impatient, frustrated drivers) between the two roads. Therefore, the new intersection at Henry Ave/Doherty Dr is likely to be a dangerous intersection, and it is a school crossing, with no traffic light.
The planned changes to US192 include narrowing the travel lanes and reducing the speed limit. These changes will undoubtedly encourage drivers to use Henry Ave instead, and will also tend to increase the cut-through traffic through the new road.
The bottom line is that the US192 changes will exacerbate a dangerous situation.
Please look into this and reevaluate the plan accordingly.
You can find extensive information on the city’s planned road, including a traffic study, on this website:

Thank you for your help.
